Seek To Serve
As we start the New Year, I want to pitch an idea to you. It is good and reasonable for us to take time to reflect, reassess, and set goals for ourselves. But if our attention is only focused on us and what we want, we will end up less than satisfied.
So, this year, please consider making room for service to others.
Focusing on the well-being of others has many benefits.
It fosters a sense of connection and common humanity
It creates opportunities for gratitude
It reminds us that joy is about relationships, not stuff
It buffers our tendency toward a helpless, victim mentality
It puts us in a position of surrender and learning
It helps us feel empowered and purposeful
It checks our sense of self-importance
It puts life into a different perspective
Etc.
This is easier than you think it might be. Start with those close to you. How could you bless, ease a burden, celebrate, or offer care? Perhaps it’s being more proactive with cleaning the kitchen (this is something I’m trying to do). It could be spending a few more minutes playing make-believe with your kids when you’d rather veg on your phone. It could be reaching out to friends and telling them you love them. It could be volunteer work. It could be just about anything.
Service is about considering others, their wants and needs, and being proactive in doing something about it.
This is some ancient wisdom that I’m inviting you to prioritize: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
I want you to plumb the depths of your heart and crush your goals this year. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But this alone will not satisfy you. You will gain everything and have nothing all at the same time. However, if you intentionally commit to showing loving kindness toward others, you will overflow with abundance.
What is one thing that you can do today to show love to another person?
Happy to be in your corner,
Tom Page, LCPC
